History

Though just six years old, FOSSMeet has grown in magnitude, in terms of speakers, delegates, number of days, outreach and budget over each successive year. The name of the meet has gone through annual modifications, due to various reasons.

The Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) Meet 2005 was a single day event, with just a handful of speakers. Born out of the vision of a handful of students, the meet was a success with the student community, as well as the speakers. The first year itself, over 180 delegates attended the meet.

FOSS.NITC 2006 was a two-day event, with 11 speakers, and over 250 delegates. Workshops covering the basics of Free and Open Source Software were held.

FOSS Meet @ NITC 2007 evolved into a three-day event, with a participation of over 300 delegates, and attended by 40 speakers from different companies like IBM, Wipro, TCS, Novell, Bosch etc. The speakers gave interesting talks, conducted Hands-on Workshops on how to use and implement Free/Open Source Software, Wikipedia and Programming, and had BOF sessions - informal interactive sessions with the speakers on specified topics. Topics ranged from Basic Linux intros to topics like How to contribute to FOSS and FOSS in Business, to advanced topics in OS, Kernel Debugging etc. Special attractions this year were BlogCamp by Kiruba Shankar and Kiran Jace, and an Overnight Programming Competition.

Atul Chitnis, Teamlead of FOSS.IN, the biggest FOSS Meet in India, appraised our meet as the 4th biggest FOSS event in the country. The meet has achieved good standards of knowledge sharing in just its third edition. After the onset of the FOSS standard innovated in NITC, many students are now using Linux and even started technically contributing to Open Source projects.

FOSSMeet @ NITC 2008 was held from 4th-6th April 2008, where we initiated FOSSDev, a yearlong competition to encourage student contribution to FOSS projects. The FOSSMeet @ NITC team was ever more committed to maintaining the spirit of the event, of catering to a wide variety of audience college and school students, faculty and professionals, and of spreading the message about the use and advantages of Free and Open Source Software.

FOSSMeet @ NITC 2009 was the fifth edition of this event. It was held from Feb 27 to March 1. Topics ranged from Basic Linux intros to topics like How to contribute to FOSS and FOSS in Business, to advanced topics in OS, Kernel Debugging etc. Special Blogging Demystified Session was conducted which turned out to be a great hit.

FOSSMeet 2010 is the sixth avatar of this ongoing saga.
