Actually what Karthik has pointed out is correct. But I think if you are really interested in coding and would like to contribute to the FOSS community and what you require is just a spark to ignite the fire in you, FOSSMeet 2010 is the right event for you.
The workshops by Pradeepto and KDE team would be a great experience for a beginner.
But if you can take some advice from a fellow CompSci first year, go on.
Any of the talks would be beneficial for the first years, so you can attend any or all of the 4 talks without qualifying for any pre-requisites.
In workshops, I would suggest Blender and Inkscape as they will focus on the basics.
Except for these, there would be a great attraction during this FOSSMeet - FOSS Huts - where you can directly interact with people working on FOSS projects and get demos of their work.
